The aim of this study was to design a gratitude scale based on the teachings of Islam, and investigate its reliability and validity. In doing so, both descriptive and survey methods were applied. In the descriptive phase, after psychologically studying religious texts, indicators of a grateful person and obstacles to thankfulness have been yielded; looking into these indicators and obstacles a preliminary scale has been designed and after vetting its structure and content by experts, it was administered to a sample of 600 students who have been selected through convenience sampling. Content validity and factorial analysis were used to check its validity. Experts’ average score on indicators was at 1.93 (out of 3) and their average score on items was at 1.22 (out of 2) showing that the validity of this scale is satisfactory. Also factorial analysis, via principal components and varimax rotation pointed out to ten 10 factors explaining 45.8 % of the variance of the items, showed the validity of this scale. These factors are: expressing gratefulness to people, gratitude to God, practical gratitude, satisfaction, productivity, denial, humility, materialism, empathy, and breadth of mind. Cronbach alpha was also applied to check the reliability. Alpha coefficient of the scale was at .895; alpha coefficients of subscales too were satisfactory showing internal reliability of all items of all factors.
Conclusion: by looking into Islamic teachings, a reliable and valid, ten-factor, 109-item scale was designed to measure gratitude.
